Curve: John Digweed - Button Factory

Curve with John Digweed (Bedrock) Button Factory - Saturday, November 25th Support: To be announced Tickets on sale 9am Friday July 7th via Ticketmaster Bio: If you’re not an avid follower of dance music but are tuned into popular culture at all you’ve likely experienced music touched by the hands of John Digweed. Originally hailing from England but having clearly arrived on the global scene nearly a decade ago, John has long since cemented his name in the pages of dance music history. His list of achievements is groundbreaking to say the least. Highlights would be the first proper dj mix compilation (“Renaissance”, done with Sasha), being the first British dj to hold a residency at what was then the world’s most well known club in NYC (Twilo, also with Sasha) as well as having remixed tracks by Danny Tenaglia, Underworld and New Order. John Digweed is a DJ's DJ. The beauty of what he does lies in just how different he really is from his contemporaries. From his early beginnings in Hastings, England at the age of 15 in the blossoming scene of acid house to the apex of the international dj'ing world, he has created and maintained a level of integrity that is the benchmark for both dj’s and producers globally. In fact, he has reached the very top of his profession, being voted #1 in a voter's poll by DJ magazine in 2001. John Digweed has become the people’s choice while maintaining his longstanding presence in underground dance culture. His popularity as both a dj and a person seems to have no limits, but his efforts transcend dj'ing alone, he is as much a producer and promoter. His moniker “Bedrock” is actually three things: a record label, a promotions company and a studio production partnership (with Nick Muir). His management and creative direction for the Bedrock record label has helped launch the careers of Danny Howells (with Dick Trevor as Science Department), Jimmy Van M, Chris Fortier and Phil Thompson (Moonface). He has had the vision and creative insight...

Sold Out // Dopplereffekt - Live [Leisure System

As part of the the Ocean after Nature exhibition, Dopplereffekt will be performing live in the Sculpture Room at the Hugh Lane Gallery over the Dublin Gallery Weekend series of events. The evening will commence with a talk from Stephen Rennicks (Drexciya Research Blog) and Richard Be (First Cut) while also appearing is Sharon Phelan with a DJ performance & visual accompaniment. Inimitable electro duo Dopplereffekt are one of the most mysterious, thrilling and consistently challenging entities in electronic music. Originated by Gerald Donald, one-half of Drexciya and responsible for era-defining releases under a variety of enigmatic aliases, the current iteration of the group includes Donald and fellow explorer To-Nhan. Together, the pair’s razor-sharp production and a peerless capacity for transportive soundscapes are as likely to reference concepts embedded in physics and biology as they are capable of moving crowded dancefloors. Dopplereffekt inhabit a unique contemporary sonic world, with a restless creativity and intense commitment to carving out their own musical space. In recent years, the duo resurfaced on Berlin’s Leisure System label with 2013’s Tetrahymena EP, the wildly well-received split Hypnagogia 12” with Objekt and 2017’s Cellular Automata, their first LP in ten years since 2007’s Calabi Yau Space on Rephlex. Cellular Automata approaches mathematical growth and decay as an iterative process, with each data input considered individually relative to the overall model. The result represents one of the group’s boldest creative endeavors, defying expectations while remaining unmistakably Dopplereffekt. Sharon Phelan [IRE] is an artist, musician and researcher working primarily with sound in site-specific contexts. Her practice includes sound installations, field recordings, audiovisual compositions, and collaborative performances with voice and electronics.

HomeBeat presents : Grandbrothers live in Dublin

Homebeat are especially delighted to announce the return of incredible piano / electonica duo Grandbrothers to these shores. Melding incredible musicianship with groundbreaking technological nous - Grandbrothers return to Dublin (after a sold out debut show as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival 2016) to showcase material from their new album 'Open' released on City Slang Records. Grandbrothers Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel, first met sevenyears ago, forming the synth-free Grandbrothers in Düsseldorf only a short while later. Pairing Sarp’s piano skills with Vogel’s talent for building the formidably intricate mechanics with which he exploits his partner’s instrument and also designing its software, 'Open' explores dimensions at which their debut, Dilation, only hinted. On stage, Sarp works at his ivory keyboard while, from behind his computer keys, Vogel live-samples his partner’s notes, triggering further effects with the aid of homemade apparatus that physically manipulate the piano’s strings and body. Live, the inventive contraptions at the heart of their work provide a physically astounding and visually astonishing display, so it’s no wonder their music was once memorably described as “open heart surgery on a grand piano.” Their performances underline the complexity and vigour of their work, bringing their love of techno and club music to the fore. As Sarp points out, “We don’t only make music for listening to, after all. As much as we enjoy playing concert halls with the audience seated we also love to play at sweaty clubs where people are standing and dancing around us.“ Tickets : €15 - €25

A full day blow-out this November, BAN BAM is a new one-day festival from Improvised Music Company with a focus on female artists in jazz and improvised music, packed full of new ideas, new sounds and new music in The Complex, Dublin 7 on Saturday 25th November. A play on ‘bean’, the Irish word for woman, BAN BAM is an exciting new festival event which heralds a longer term initiative by IMC to highlight female musicians playing jazz, improvised and experimental music, while supporting and empowering the wider scene and next generation through a variety of activities in 2018 and beyond. Kicking off with some late afternoon panels and discussions from 4pm, BAN BAM looks at the issues surrounding the gender imbalance within the Irish jazz scene, examining studies around unconscious bias, how gender-based social conventions influence choice of instrument, the long standing stereotypes of jazz, early music education and the role of promoters and media in addressing a gender imbalance in the wider world of live music. Our panelists include British composer Issie Barratt renowned for her high profile work in jazz education, Angela Dorgan from First Music Contact, and broadcaster, musician and composer Ellen Cranitch. From 7pm til late, BAN BAM presents a vibrant programme of live music at The Complex, headlined by London-based Afrobeat band-of-the-moment KOKOROKO. KOKOROKO (meaning 'be strong' in Urhobo) is a London collective of musicians led by a stonking all female horn section embodying the BAN-BAM ‘chicks with chops’ ethos. They will let loose with their original brand of brass-fuelled rhythms steeped in an urban London attitude. Ruba Shamshoum ربى شمشوم’s music mixes the harmony and improvised playfulness of jazz, with tinges of her native Middle Eastern and Arabic musical influence, creating a distinctive and vibrant sound in the company of a 5 piece band. One of BAN BAMs highlights is our specially commissioned collaboration between two of our most innovative and...

Songhoy Blues // Dublin

Songhoy Blues + Special guests The Button Factory, Dublin Saturday 25th November 2017 West Africa’s Songhoy Blues announce date for The Button Factory in support of their second album 'Résistance’. Listen to ‘Bamako’, the first track taken from the album here: Released on Transgressive Records on Friday June 16th 2017, Résistance is a bold, inspiring, outward-looking record that perfectly reflects the position the band have found themselves in following the massive success of their breakthrough debut, Music In Exile, released in 2015. The band have recently unveiled Bamako, the first track taken from the album. With a lyrical refrain of “Il Ma Fata”, which translates as "Let's Go Out”, the track documents and celebrates the night-life of Bamako. Talking about the track, leader singer Aliou said: With Bamako we just wanted to write something fun and positive about where we come from. So much of what people hear about Africa is negative, bad news stories about war and famine just dominate the common image of Africa. But this track is about dispelling that image by describing something everyone can relate to, going out on a Saturday night, to show that Africa isn't just what people see in the news, there's so much more to it than that. The album was recorded in the autumn of 2016 at The Pool studio in London with producer Neil Comber (MIA, Django Django, Crystal Fighters, Declan McKenna) and in keeping with their spirit of collaboration which saw them previously work with Nick Zinner, Julian Casablancas and Damon Albarn, Resistance features additional synths by Lxury and vocal contributions from the likes of Iggy Pop, Elf Kid and Stealing Sheep. Beyond this, the album features beautiful string parts (Hometown) and in one particularly surprising, moving instance (One Colour), a children’s choir. Lyrically and sonically, Résistance is a huge leap forward for Songhoy Blues, a musical snapshot of a band at the...
